I could be a comic book

So George asked a few of his friends to create 5 small works of art (on small MDF panels which he posted to each of us).  We are supposed to mail one to each of the artists involved (I haven't posted mine yet but plan to soon).  


I'm calling my collection "I could be a comic book".

Tin toys and other memories come and go.  Ultimately the memories of a moment or moments as a child when in the presence of something new.  Like a tin toy or a comic book.  Perhaps it's just novelty and nostalgia.  This applies to all images below but mostly the first one gave me this sense, even though at most times I was seeing an insect of some kind evolving - gee that cant be good?

I wish I was a comic.
I like comic books but never really connected to them and as a result it's like they are punishing me for not loving them like so many other people do.  They look great and as with so many other things it's as if there is a promise of discovery that lives within the idea of the comics world.  If I had the spare time to do so I might dive into comic books and really get absorbed into the culture and fanfare that comes with it but from a by-standers perspective I cant see myself doing that.  I did make a start to collecting about 30 years ago or so but it was always a matter of buying them for the unique blend of story and artwork that would grab me and so I ended up buying the comics that were on the fast sale rack usually because they didn't quite hit the mark with most fanboy types.  I think comics will go in the realm of forgotten and held dear by those who got to experience them before video games took over.  For me? I just want to be able to dip my toe in and get a taste then move on to other things but take something from the comics with me.  Maybe Im resentful because I dont have the discipline it takes to be a real fan or even artist.  I reckon its more because I want the straight lines of comic art to bend so that I can then feel like it's OK for me to do the same

Sometimes it's like I have this empty space in me where comics should have filled the void but I was too late (as usual) to catch on to how awesome they are and in my childhood my parents would never have understood so they never encouraged it (not even worth mentioning that but there must be some kind of historical thing going on so just considering it could be like a time-capsule thing and if you dont know what I'm referring to then come back check here some time - I'll try and elaborate in a future update when Ive had time to think about it).  Anyhow this (the posca paintings) is what I have.  I think they look better in real life.

At some point this was getting lost in rigid shapes.  working with posca markers makes it hard to go over too many times and paint starts to flake if you do too much.

Kids' favourite.  This is the one my daughter wants me to keep and seems to be the pick for most.  I tried to resist the temptation to keep adding more detail.

Probably the test piece.  Tried a few things on this one that eventually I would repeat in others but didn't really draw me back to it very often.   At some point I had to add red to it to make it feel as though it was worth the trouble.
